vn.physics.ubc.ca: Using the PG Compilers

• The Portland Group's HPF, F90, F77, C and C++ compilers are installed on the three front-ends only. A local version of the on-line documentation for these products can be accessed from HERE.

  To use the compilers, ensure that

  (1) the environment variable PGI is set as follows

  setenv PGI /usr/local/pgi     (csh or tcsh)
  
  PGI=/usr/local/pgi            (bash)
  export PGI
  

  (2) your path includes $PGI/linux86/bin, e.g.

  set path=(. $PGI/linux86/bin /usr/bin /bin /usr/local/bin /usr/X11R6/bin)    (csh or tcsh)
  
  PATH=".:$PGI/linux86/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:"       (bash)
  export PATH
  

  (3) your MANPATH environment variable includes $PGI/man, e.g.

  setenv MANPATH "`manpath`:$PGI/man"     (csh or tcsh)
  
  MANPATH="`manpath`:$PGI/man"            (bash)
  export MANPATH
  

  It is of course, best to make the above settings in your ~/.cshrc, ~/.tcshrc or ~/.bashrc file.

  Available commands for compilation, debugging and profiling commands include

   pgCC, pgcc, pgf77, pgf90, pghpf, pgprof, pgdbg, and Xpgdbg
  

  Assuming you've set MANPATH as noted above, you should be able to get detailed information on any of the above commands via man.

• A version of MPICH compiled with the PG compilers has been installed on the three front-ends only (i.e. you will need to compile and launch jobs via mpirun on one of the front-ends). Here is a sample Makefile which compiles and links a simple MPICH demo program fpi.f90. You may wish to add

  /usr/local/PGI/bin
  

  to your path---if you do so, make sure it appears BEFORE /usr/local/bin, e.g.

  set path=(. /usr/local/PGI/bin $PGI/linux86/bin /usr/bin /bin /usr/local/bin /usr/X11R6/bin)    (csh or tcsh)
  
  PATH=".:/usr/local/PGI/bin:$PGI/linux86/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:"       (bash)
  export PATH
